In fact, New Orleans is hardly the only city in the United States that defies nature — San Francisco and Los Angeles are built on earthquake fault lines, Phoenix, Ariz., has no natural water supply. Why give up on New Orleans? Another commentator for Newsweek, Jonathan Alter, wrote in the same issue of the magazine that contained Will's column, "New Orleans will need not just the superhuman efforts of loyal locals, but the love of the nation it does so much to enliven." Is the city to be denied that love?
