An ex-junkie just released from three years in prison who hopes to regain custody of her preschool daughter, Sherry is tough, troubled and in a desperate scramble to regain her life.
Gyllenhaal said she usually doesn’t do research for her characters, preferring to find them from the screenplay. But ‘‘Sherrybaby” took her to halfway houses where she met women just released from prison. She accompanied them to visits with their parole officers and to job training programs.
The result is a performance that is raw and real - in its sexuality, language and compassion. Gyllenhaal, 28, already has won the Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s Best Actress prize for ‘‘Sherrybaby” and is on the fast track for Oscar attention.
‘‘This movie is the poor orphan baby that needs me. I’ve got to do everything I can for this one,” she said. ‘‘I love this one.
With its unsentimental look at how tough life can be for a woman taking baby steps toward responsibility, ‘‘Sherrybaby” is an eye-opener.
